Performance making is a process open to anything and nothing, between questions, statements, dreams and pondering. It’s also about the negotiation of time and intensity. With this workshop, I offer processes of unpacking our concepts, making decisions, performing and reflecting. We will deal with starting tools, the unlocking of ideas through practical exercises, we will compose songs, solo performances, and look into how different manifestations of physicality and choreography communicate.

The workshop includes automatic writing and automatic speech exercises, interactive tasks to expand thinking and the ways we perceive creative processes. It also includes exercises that deal with performativity in relation to the expression of the body, the voice, as well as exercises for writing short texts or songs. Finally, participants create short solos to be presented and to operate within a feedback framework, addressing different stages of making a performance.

The workshop is aimed at choreographers, performers or performing artists interested in creating performance work. Participants may bring with them an idea they already have for a new work. Otherwise, the exercises of the first day will produce thoughts and ideas that can be used throughout the duration of the workshop.

Eleana works as a performer since 2004, makes performance work since 2011, writes since 2015.

Co-founder of bytheway productions, a performance, theatre, scenography and applied arts non-profit company. Co-director of open access makerspace Makers Will Make. President (2017 – today) of ‘Nea Kinisi’ (Νέα Κίνηση), representative organisation for dance companies, dancers and choreographers practicing advocacy for dance and performance in Cyprus. Close collaborator of Dance House Lemesos, Center of Performing Arts MITOS and .pelma.Lia Haraki.

She obtained the DasArts Master of Theatre from the Amsterdam School of Arts in 2016. In 2009 she completed her BA in Dance and Choreography at Bath Spa University, UK.

She’s been developing her own writing method as a choreographic means based on spoken word, rhythm and sounds of speaking. She uses it as a research and reflection tool as well as a means to performance material.

Generosity and care are of utmost importance to me; I address these both within artistic processes but also within the conditions of work.

Her artistic process involves a combination of extreme introspection and observations of a bigger picture constantly redefining her own positioning in the world.

Her work was presented at the Cyprus International Contemporary Dance Festival, the Open House Festival, the Cyprus Choreography Platform, Flashart, Dance Days Chania, the Come Together Festival in Amsterdam, the Athens Festival, the Operaestate B-Motion Festival of Bassano del Grappa, Italy. Her work ‘In a nutshell’ (2015) was also a finalist at the Arte Laguna Prize 16.17 and was presented at the Venice Arsenale.
