Concept of the workshop
“Spine as Rhythm” is an embodied House Dance workshop shaped through an Afro-centric perspective, emphasizing the spine as a living archive, a connector of ancestry, rhythm, and resistance. Drawing from the Afro-diasporic roots of House culture—its spirit of liberation and community—the workshop explores how the spine can guide groove, flow, and improvisation. Participants will learn foundational elements of House Dance while grounding the practice in musicality and storytelling. Rather than treating the spine as a functional anatomical structure, the workshop approaches it as an extension of one’s identity—a channel through which rhythm travels, memory resonates, and dance becomes both expression and empowerment.
The session blends physical training, guided improvisation, historical contextualization, and group tasks, creating a space where dancers connect technique with cultural roots.
The workshop unfolds in three interconnected phases
1. Grounding & Afro-centric Body Awareness
• Participants begin with breathwork, spinal articulations, and undulations inspired by African and Afro-diasporic movement traditions.
• The session introduces the idea of the spine as a storyteller, the center of vibration and continuity, linking groove, posture, and emotional presence.
• Through polyrhythmic exercises, students learn to distribute movement through the spine, pelvis, and chest to create fluid transitions.
2. Foundations of House Dance: participants will explore this style with emphasis on
• Jackin’ – internal groove initiated from the spine and the base of the workshop
• Footwork – skating, shuffle variations, loose legs
• Rhythmic play & musical interpretation – the transformation of these techniques into personal expression called freestyle (improvisation).
3. Improvisation, Identity & Collective Flow
• Group and individual freestyle (improvisation) tasks explore how movement emerges
from the inner self.
• The session culminates in a guided cypher that highlights community, respect, and shared energy—core values of House culture.
