The tools, tasks and movement materials of Fleshboost are inspired by parkour, martial arts, breakdance and some other exceptionally technical and physical moving forms.
Fleshboost is a highly dynamic workshop during which we investigate the physical and mechanical concurrences and similarities between movements in sports and dance, and we aim to apply the most significant principles of these movement languages in choreography and improvisation. I’m interested in motion that is diverse in speed, specific in coordination or rhythmically unique. The fitter we are the closer we can get to executing movements perfectly and effortlessly, thus the goal in the first parts of the classes is to provide physical preparation and technical understanding in order to succeed in the challenges we face later on.
Each class starts with a (re-)warm up in which we gradually increase the size, speed and complexity of the movements, using tasks such as isolation, repetition, muscle- tension/relaxation, rolling, melting, waving, spiraling, swinging, shaking, bouncing and more.
Instead of expressive, performative dancing, it is an analytic way of continuous moving until the inner heat and sweat appear. Focusing inwards, paying attention to our own bodies’ needs, choosing from the proposed tools the ones most suitable for us individually. This is followed by or interfused with a short but thorough active-stretching section in which there are no static poses.
Keywords: playfulness, thoroughness, discovery, determination.
Next we delve into a high-intensity training session – progressing from basic to advanced level of strengthening, agility and technical exercises – which prepares our bodies for the following part consisting of floor acrobatics, spirals, spins, jumps (takeoffs and landings) as well as some skill-, coordination- and rhythm-games.
Keywords: focus, logic, momentum, endurance.
In the remaining time participants learn folk dance- and martial art-infused contemporary phrases, and they take time perfecting the moves keeping in mind the tiniest details and keeping a strong focus on practicing the transitional movements as well to help conjure up something beyond simply executing element after element: Dancing!
Keywords: precision, timing, musicality, explosion.
