Serge Arthur Dodo is a choreographer and dance artist from Ivory Coast who first started in street dance competitions.
After graduated with an art degree in Ivory Coast, Serge joined the renowned ‘Ecole des sables’ at the National Art Institute in Senegal to complete his training and had the opportunity to learn from Germaine Acogny, the mother of African contemporary, Andrea Boll, Gilles Jobin, Gabriel Smeets, Patrick Acogny and Nora Chipaumire (USA – Zimbabwe).
He is the artistic director and choreographer of his own dance company called King’Art and has developed several pieces with his company in the last decade, as well as choreographing for TV shows such as ‘The Voice Afrique Francophone’ and ‘The Voice Kids Africa’. He was a lecturer of Afro-contemporary classes at the University AHK of Amsterdam in the Expanded Contemporary Dance department between 2018-2020.
Serge is currently a member of the international African cast that reinterprets Pina Bausch’s piece ‘The Rite of Spring’ (collaboration between Pina Bausch foundation, Ecole des Sables and Sadler’s Wells).
“L’ombre de ma sueur” addresses the ideological aspect of my person as an African dancer and the roots of my dance in my culture, my social experience and my personality. It is a reflection on the body, my body, an African body but also a contemporary body in an African society.
At the same time, it is a tribute to a father, my father, the man whose image I am and who is my shadow. An abrupt and brutal separation that haunts me and always brings me back to this culture and this rootedness in human and African values, to feel connected to him whatever the time and place.
